Reflections is a wonderful opportunity for students' creativity to be recognized,

which helps to build confidence regardless of the outcome!

We encourage ALL Skyview students to imagine and explore with Reflections!

RECAP

*** We will update this when we get information about if any Skyview Artist submissions move on to National Judging.

This year we got 28 submissions for Skyview Middle School!

The Skyview PTSA assembled a group of judges to make the tough decision of which 20 submissions would go to Northshore Council PTSA level judging, along with one accessible art submission.

The Northshore Council PTSA level judging determined the 10 submissions named "State Qualifiers", those submissions that would be judged at State level for potential promoting to Nationals. The "Judges Choice" submissions are noted for their creativity but do not continue to state judging.

What is Reflections?

The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works to reflect this year's theme, "Accepting Imperfection”.

Reflections is so much more than "just an art contest."

  • It helps kids take risks
  • Kids can be inspired
  • It helps students think creatively
  • They can receive positive recognition
  • Students will be celebrated for their works of art
  • It also allows our community to celebrate creativity in our students!
  • There is an option of an Accessible Arts Division, if that applies to your student (find details below).

Watch this brief video for a Reflections introduction.

Submission Types:

A student may submit an entry in any of six arts areas. Only original works of art are accepted. The six art areas are:

  • Literature – works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, prose, drama, short stories and lyrics.
  • Music Composition – original musical composition, with or without words.
  • Photography - color or black and white, including techniques: photo-gram, retouched, montage, sandwich and multiple exposure.
  • Visual Arts - drawing, painting in tempera, oil, acrylic, watercolor & t-shirt paints, computer generated art, two-dimensional collage, printmaking, needlework & leather tooling.
  • Film/Video Production - original works, with or without sound, of animation, narrative, documentary, experimental or music video/film.
  • Choreography/Dance - originally choreographed dance composition.

Rules:

  • Student works are critiqued against others in the same grade division.
  • All students at Skyview will be a part of the Middle School division.
  • Students may enter in more than one category, but only once per category.
  • Additional info can be found here.

How to Participate:

Take inspiration from this year's theme, "Accepting Imperfection” and create!

In addition to the general Reflections rules, there are also rules specific to each category.

Competition guidelines for each of the art categories is available below:

Accessible Arts Division Information:

The National PTA accessible arts division is an option for students with a disability as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Generally, rules and guidelines within the special artists division are intended to ensure accessibility to the National PTA Reflections® program and are modeled after the guidelines outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We are asking local PTA chairs and council chairs to verify that artists meet this criteria before judging.

Complete details are included in the 2024-25 Special Artist Rules | en español.

Washington State PTA will be judging the special artist submissions in two divisions:

  • Elementary (Kindergarten – 5th grade)
  • Secondary (6th grade – 12th grade)
